ANIMAL WELFARE

Animal Welfare means supporting conditions that allow animals to live healthy, safe, and enriched lives. An animal is considered to be in a positive state of welfare when it is healthy, comfortable, well nourished, protected from harm, able to express natural behaviours, and free from unnecessary pain, fear, and distress. Strong animal welfare practices include disease prevention, veterinary care, appropriate shelter, responsible management, proper nutrition, and humane handling that promotes dignity and quality of life.

ARTS, CULTURE & HERITAGE

Arts, Culture and Heritage are woven into the identity of the Shuswap and are often a welcome discovery for both residents and visitors. Across the region, a rich variety of experiences celebrates creativity, storytelling, and community connection—from public art, Indigenous and First Nations artists, live music, theatre, galleries, and dance to the preservation and celebration of local history and heritage.

COMMUNITY

Community supports a wide range of emerging and ongoing needs that strengthen the social fabric of the Shuswap. It is designed to address areas that may not fit neatly within other funding categories while helping build connected, resilient, and inclusive communities. Initiatives that foster belonging and inclusion, improve access to transportation and housing, support employment and economic participation, enhance safety, and strengthen community connections may all fall within this broad cause pillar.

EDUCATION

Education is an integral part of building a successful community. Access to learning opportunities for all ages can have a profound impact on many other quality-of-life indicators, including: creating a sense of belonging, reducing crime rates, improving resident health (physical and mental) and building a strong regional economy.

ENVIRONMENT

A healthy environment is foundational to a thriving community. The Shuswap Lake watershed supports the region’s ecosystems, quality of life, and long-term community well-being. As the Shuswap continues to grow and evolve, it is important to foster a thoughtful balance between development, recreation, and the stewardship of our watershed and surrounding environment to help protect and sustain this vital natural resource for future generations.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Health and Wellness and access to quality healthcare are essential to building a vibrant and resilient community. Health and wellness contribute to stronger social connections, improved quality of life, and engaged citizens. Throughout the Shuswap, the natural environment encourages active lifestyles and outdoor recreation, while a range of healthcare services and supports help residents access care and maintain overall well-being across the region.

RECREATION

Recreation is essential for our wellbeing, providing significant physical and mental health benefits. By foot or on wheels, at a sports court or exploring a local trail, recreation offers valuable opportunities for residents to keep active and stay connected. The region’s lake access and four-season climate provide numerous opportunities for year-round activities.

SENIORS

Seniors – promoting successful ageing is an important part of maintaining physical and mental well-being in the elderly. Some issues that the elderly face include grief, bereavement, isolation (social & geographic), poor health status, inadequate social support networks, inadequate or conflicted social environment in their current living situation. Projects for seniors can include, but are not limited to, housing, physical and mental well-being, access to rehabilitative services and equipment and connection to family and community.

SOCIAL EQUITY

Social Equity –  the well-being of a community is influenced by how opportunities and economic resources are experienced across the population. Income disparities and barriers to stable employment can create challenges for individuals and families in meeting everyday needs and participating fully in community life. Strengthening social and economic inclusion helps build a more connected, resilient region where all residents have the opportunity to thrive and where support reaches those facing the greatest challenges.

YOUTH

The Youth category supports programs, services, and opportunities that help children and youth build resilience, develop skills, strengthen connections, and reach their full potential. Priority is given to initiatives that reduce social and economic barriers and create equitable access to opportunities for young people facing challenges or disadvantage. Funding in this area is intended to complement the important roles of families, schools, and community networks by enhancing environments where youth can learn, grow, participate, and thrive.
