Kathleen Margaret (Munro) Brown was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1946. She grew up in Salmon Arm, and lived in Kamloops, Kelowna and Vancouver before returning to Salmon Arm in 2005. Kathy passed away in Salmon Arm 20 years later, on September 13, 2025. Her husband, Norm, set up this memorial fund in her memory.
Kathy’s first years were spent on an acreage in an adobe-style home with a wood-fired kitchen stove. She was four years old when she, her parents and two brothers, Don and Bill, moved from Saskatchewan to a farm in the Salmon River Valley near Silver Creek. She grew up with a strong appreciation for the outdoors and was always happy to help with the farm chores. She also became passionate about cooking and reading from an early age.
Kathy excelled at both athletics and academics at school. She played on the Jewels basketball team, winning a provincial championship in grade 12, and finished school with honours. She went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia.
An intelligent and curious person with a strong sense of adventure, Kathy taught English in Quebec City before embarking on a trip to Europe with a friend. She met her first husband, Paul, in Greece, and they moved to Kamloops, where their children Dimitri and Michael Zaphiris were born. The young family later settled in Kelowna.
Kathy’s love of learning helped her become fluent in French and Greek and well-versed in Spanish. She served as an official translator for the court in Kamloops. She was also a talented artist and calligrapher.
After her first marriage ended, Kathy worked in Burnaby, where she met Norm. They lived in Burnaby and Delta before returning to Salmon Arm in 2005, building their dream home on the property where Kathy lived as a child.
Norm and Kathy enjoyed a very happy marriage, sharing an appreciation of golf, travelling the world, and spending time with friends and family. Kathy was always willing to support her community, and was particularly active with the local Rotary club.
About the Fund
The Kathy Brown (Nee Munro) Memorial Fund will enable Shuswap Community Foundation to award grants in the name of the Fund to charitable or non-profit community service organizations in the Shuswap that support literacy and women’s safety.
In the case that it is impossible to award grants to these focus areas in a particular fiscal year, the Shuswap Community Foundation Board may allocate grants to alternate focus areas.
