Eoin Archibald Millar created the Millar Building Fund to assist with the housing and operations of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet 222 Shuswap Squadron here in Salmon Arm. He was inspired by his grandfather and father who served during the world wars. Eoin’s grandfather, Archie Millar, served in France with the 4th Battalion, who were credited with the successful conquest of Vimy Ridge during World War One. Eoin’s father, J.B. Millar, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force flying 29 overseas missions in Lancaster bombers, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
J.B. supported the establishment of the local air cadet squadron 33 years ago (1993) and believed in the training of youth between the ages of 12 and 19. With their motto “To Learn, To Serve, To Advance,” promoting physical fitness, citizenship and an interest in the Canadian Armed Forces, he believed aviation education provided great value to the country and personal growth opportunities for cadets.
Over the past 33 years, hundreds of local youth have benefitted from air cadet training and some have attained their Private Pilot License. The success of the program is based on a partnership between the Canadian Armed Forces and the Air Cadet League of Canada. The local Squadron Sponsoring Committee, made up of cadet parents, has the responsibility of providing housing and funding for some of the training.
Eoin started the Millar Building Fund to honour his family’s legacy of service. He has contributed his support to the squadron because of his strong belief in the aims of the cadet program.
About the Fund
Income available for distribution from the Millar Building Fund will be disbursed annually to the R.C.A.C Shuswap Squadron Sponsoring Committee for the purpose of operational needs including meeting and office space.
