The Shuswap Hospital Foundation has been in existence since 1986 when the Shuswap Lake General Hospital Endowment Society was registered as a charitable society. In 1993, three health care societies were amalgamated to form the foundation named the Shuswap Hospital Foundation.

The Shuswap Hospital Foundation supports Shuswap Lake General Hospital and health care facilities in an area with a population of 36,000 and growing. With the TransCanada Highway which passes through our communities, plus population increases in the summer months, there is a necessity to continue to ensure the provision of high priority medical equipment to the area health care facilities to enable the best in patient care.

Funds received by the Shuswap Hospital Foundation are used to:

  • Meet the needs for priority equipment, equipment upgrades and facility upgrades to ensure best care of patients and residents of Shuswap Lake General Hospital and health care facilities in Salmon Arm and surrounding areas from Sicamous to Sorrento.
  • Assist in local access to a variety of health related equipment.

The Shuswap Hospital Foundation has raised significant funds for a variety of equipment and upgrades such as the purchase the CT Scanner at a cost of $1.6 million as well as the purchase of the CT Scanner upgrade in 2014 at a cost of $204,000, which has extended the life span of the CT Scanner and enabled a more efficient and effective delivery of scans.

Funds were also provided for operating room equipment, emergency room equipment as well as equipment that serves the cardiac, maternity, physiotherapy, palliative care, laboratory and pharmacy areas. The Shuswap Hospital Foundation also partnered in raising $300,000 for the newly constructed Bastion Place in 1986 as well as an additional $300,000 for furnishing and equipping the new emergency department in 2010.

The provision of much needed medical equipment and upgrades provides our medical staff with up-to-date diagnostic and health care equipment for patients in the Shuswap area. In addition to the larger items, the Shuswap Hospital Foundation continues to raise funds for the purchase of high priority equipment.

Each year the Shuswap Hospital Foundation Board of Directors is challenged to consider equipment options and project possibilities, it is only through the generosity of our donors that the possibilities become realities. A donation to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation is a gift of hope for future generations. It is a gift that will help create a healthier Shuswap community and better health care facilities for family, friends and neighbours. Our donors are investing in a legacy for caring, community health care facilities that improve patient care for all patients in the Shuswap area.

After almost 33 years, nearly $8.5 million has been raised to improve health care in our community with the purchase of up-to-date technology. At the Shuswap Hospital Foundation we recognize that the future has greater challenges and increased needs, with the help of our donors we want to continue to ensure that the best health care possible can be provided to us all.
