Individuals and Families

We Share Your Values

We care about our homes, our communities, the places we have lived, worked and raised a family. Many of us want to find a way to give back to these places.

Contributing to Community Prosperity

SCF actively engages in the prosperity of the Shuswap by providing a wide variety of giving options to align with your charitable interests and values. When you make a donation or gift to SCF, we invest that gift into a permanent endowment fund. Your original gift is not spent. Earnings from your gift today and in the future, are then distributed through grants to support a wide range of charitable causes within our community.

Funds can be established in your name, or in the name of your family, or anyone you wish to honour (minimums may apply). All grants distributed from your fund – today and in the future – are then awarded to charities in the name of your fund. It’s a great way to give back to, and be remembered by your community.

Whether you choose to advance your philanthropy through the Shuswap Community Foundation or not, we are here to help. We work alongside you to support your needs – sharing our knowledge on everything from the power of giving through an endowment, to considerations around complex giving.

Encouraging Informed Philanthropy

Shuswap Community Foundation supports our philanthropic partners by helping them answer questions like:

  • What kind of impact do you envision? Is your impact immediate or longer term?
  • How much involvement do you and your family wish to have in your areas of charitable interest?
  • How can Shuswap Community Foundation share our knowledge and resources to support your benevolence?

SCF works with charitable and Not-for-Profit groups throughout the Shuswap. In doing so, our directors and staff are experts on community giving.

Giving Options for Individuals & Families

SCF offers endowment fund options to match your objective and preferred level of involvement. Choose the one thats right for you.

Unrestricted Funds

You can use your gift to meet ever-chang- ing community needs – including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being – arts and culture, education, the environment, health and social services, youth, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift makes it possible to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.

Field of Interest Funds

You can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. The arts. Community health. Aging. At-risk youth. You identify your personal area of interest when making your gift; our board awards grants to community groups and programs that are making a difference in the area you select.

Designated Funds

You can direct your gift to a specific charity or area of interest. Help provide ongoing funding for a senior centre, museum, your church, or virtually any nonprofit charitable organization. You identify the recipient you wish to benefit through your gift; our staff manages the annual distribution of funds.

Donor Advised Funds

You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. You work with our professional grantmaking staff, identifying ways to use dollars from your Donor Advised Fund to address the issues and needs you care about most. Your recom- mendations are submitted to our board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars.

Funding Areas

Through research conducted as part of our Vital Signs initiative, SCF has identified several key areas for funding support.

Why a Community Foundation?

Many organizations are working to create better communities. A few important factors make the community foundation approach different.

Long-Term View

Because community foundations focus on building permanent endowments, we are able to tackle long-term community challenges as well as immediate needs.

Permanence

Gifts to a community foundation endowment work to meet community needs in perpetuity.

Personalized Donor Service

Community foundations are uniquely equipped to help individual donors meet their particular philanthropic goals by providing in-depth knowledge of their community along with expertise in a wide range of flexible charitable giving options.

Broad Perspective

Community foundations make effective grants and develop networks in a wide range of sectors. With this in-depth community knowledge, we can identify opportunities in many fields and build on existing community strengths. We are also well placed to make simple, but often powerful, connections between people and organizations in the community.

Commitment to Community

Community foundations are broad-based, volunteer-driven local organizations. Because our view of community issues and priorities is independent and crosses many sectors, community foundations have an opportunity for collaborative leadership that reflects the interest of the community at large.

Accountability

Community foundations believe our values and way of working, not just our work, can be a powerful tool for building social capital. As responsible members of the charitable sector, community foundations strive for flexible, transparent governance and leadership practices that welcome volunteer involvement, encourage dialogue among diverse voices in the community, and inspire commitment to philanthropy.
